Sheriff Creates County Drug Unit

Cooperation With City Police Department to Continue

Keeping a promise that was a centerpiece of his campaign, Sheriff-Elect Carter has announced the creation of a county drug enforcement unit within the Sheriff's Office. On Monday, December 4, 2006, a drug enforcement unit within the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will exercise the authority of the Sheriff's Office for the enforcement of drug laws in Lee County. This will replace the joint city-county drug unit operated by the Sanford Police Department.

In a letter to Sanford Police Chief Ronnie Yarborough, Sheriff Carter said, “Since communication, coordination, and collaboration can take place in the absence of formal reporting relationships, there can and should be a continuing joint effort between the Sanford Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office to wage an effective fight against illegal drugs.”

“I am committed to full cooperation with you in making all of Lee County a safer, more secure environment”, Carter added.

It is refreshing to see an elected official do what was promised in the campaign. In this case you not only took back responsibility for drug enforcement in the county but also kept the public informed on what you were doing. Keep up the good work.

I doubt that drug dealers pay much attention to city limits or county lines. They just want to make as much money as they can as quickly as they can. As a resident of the city, I expect the Police Department and the Sheriff's Office to work together. Both need to make this approach work.

Outside the city limits has been neglected for so long as far as local law enforcement is concerned. When I was a little boy growing up in the county, it was just a bunch of farmers out here and everyone knew their neighbor but that is not the case today. Around half the population of Lee County lives beyond the city limits. We needed new direction at the sheriff's office and I support what Sheriff Carter is doing. I feel that as citizens of Lee County. We now have a friend at the sheriff's office.

It is very refreshing to see a positive change in any department. With the new initiatives if Sheriff Carter we can know that the men and women of law enforcement are in good hands as well as the citizens of Lee County. Sheriff Carter is reaching out to the Sanford Police Department with the spirit of cooperation he would like to give to the citizens of this entire county. I am proud to see a man who has not forgotten where he came from like most do when they are elected Sheriff. I will check in on this blog from time to time. My comments are direct and to the point and I pull no punches. I think it is impressive for a Sheriff to open up to the public in this manner. I know of no other Sheriff in North Carolina that would do it.
